Are you finishing your orthodontic treatment and finally see your teeth aligned and even smile with more desire and confidence? Yupi !!! And now that?
Well, now begins a vital phase of which your specialist in Orthodontics in Valencia, Dr. Victoria Pons Soria will already talk to you: the retention phase.
What is the retention phase?
This is the last phase of any orthodontic treatment, once the orthodontic study and the active phase or the time during which the patient takes the orthodontic treatment chosen in the mouth.
Once the active phase has finished, reaching the perfect alignment of the teeth, all the equipment is removed from the mouth. It is then when the retainers are placed, whose purpose is to guarantee the durability of the result.
Throughout the treatment, the teeth are forced into a series of progressive micro movements until they reach the desired position. This position must be settled once the orthodontic appliance is removed and for this purpose we place the retainers, since otherwise, the teeth tend to move to their initial position.
If possible, they are placed immediately after the end of the active phase, that is, on the same day of orthodontic removal. The specialist decides what type of retention is the most appropriate for the patient and in the case of the removable, measures are taken in the same act to be able to place them as soon as possible.
These retainers can be of two types: removable or fixed.
The fixed ones are placed cemented in the inner part of the teeth in the form of fine braided wire. Nobody notices its presence, with which its aesthetic component is very important, as well as its comfort, since it does not bother to eat or speak.
In the case of removable materials, these are transparent splints tailored to each patient. They are comfortable and discreet.
How long should I take them?
Easy; If they are fixed, for life. In the case of removable materials, it is your orthodontist who will indicate it best, attending to your case and your specific needs. In principle, the usual thing is that you carry retention in both arches in a continuous way to be postponing the use of the removable always following the indications of your dentist in Valencia, normally during the hours of sleep.
And if it breaks or takes off?
Ask for an appointment at your dental clinic in Valencia as soon as possible to solve the problem, re-cement the lingual arch or make a new essix to prevent your teeth from moving.
